Calls to make, actions to take, dates to save and..
In case of loss of cabin pressure, put the oxygen mask...
Calls to make:
Senators re: budget and cuts to healthcare for 15 million people. CALL EVERY DAY!! The longer we delay this, the more sand we throw in the gears, there is a chance we could sink this bill. It still has to go back to the House.
Senator Tillis passed the flyer below out to his GOP colleagues; he knows the impact. Keep calling.
Thom Tillis: D.C. (202) 224-6342 Raleigh (919) 856-4630 Charlotte (704) 509-9087
Ted Budd: D.C. 202-224-3154 Raleigh 984-349-5061 Wilmington 910-218-7600
Suggested Script: (Or use the tool created by the Poor People’s Campaign. Or use 5Calls.org.)
This is (name) and I am from (zip). The current GOP MAGA Budget will take health care away from millions (600K in NC alone), kick seniors out of assisted living and nursing homes, close rural hospitals and impact everyone’s health care by impacting already overburdened Emergency Rooms. The Senator must vote no on any budget that takes away health care to provide tax cuts for rich corporations and billionaires.
Vote NO on Emil Bove. While at the Justice Department, he said he would ignore court orders to implement this regimes deportation goals.
Suggested Script: This is (name) from (zip). The Senator must vote NO on the nomination of Emil Bove’s nomination to a federal appeals court. Thank you.
Over 2.5 millions people in NC are at risk of losing Medicaid healthcare in 2025. We won't let that happen!
Bring your energy, your voice and your story to this fight by joining our weekly phone bank. We will be prompting North Carolinians to call their elected representatives in Congress with a simple message- we need health care, not cuts!
Training will be provided, and there's no experience nessecary. The only thing you need is your phone, a computer, laptop, or tablet, and a quiet place to make calls.

Building the 2026 Blue Wave: How we do it.
First-time canvassers welcome! We'll provide all the information you need and can also pair you with an experienced canvasser. It will be hot, but don’t worry – we’ll keep our canvassing time on the shorter side and stick to the shade, and there is no pressure to stay out longer than you’re comfortable. And even if you’re not prepared to canvass, please sign up anyway! This is a great opportunity to meet and talk with Justice Earls, and we’d love your feedback on our new script and lit.
In a midterm, turnout is often more than 20 points lower than in a presidential year, and turning out folks who don’t typically vote in midterms is the low-hanging fruit. These folks are already voters – they just may not know what’s on the ballot in a midterm or how it impacts their lives.
In 2018 – the last Trump midterm – the statewide blue wave was driven by increased turnout, particularly among left-leaning voters in competitive legislative districts, where significant voter outreach was happening. That year, we broke the supermajorities in both chambers of our state legislature and elected Justice Anita Earls and 3 Democratic Court of Appeals judges. We can do it again – AND flip Tillis’s seat blue – by starting early and working strategically to turn out left-leaning voters.

The Durham Democrats are supporting the Durham Public Schools Foundation in their annual supply drive for our public schools. The “Fill That Bus! Fuel the Year” campaign helps teachers provide classroom essentials to fuel students’ success. The Durham Democrats are lending a hand. Please consider donating some of the following items: 12-inch rulers, 2-pocket folders, graph filler paper, 3 x 5 index cards, blue ink pens, notebook paper (college ruled), sheet protectors, pencil grips and tissue boxes. You can get one of almost all of these (except tissues) for about $30 at Office Depot or Staples, or head to Costco or the Scrap Exchange and see what you can find!
Durham Democrats HELP HUB IS LIVE (Pilot program!)
Some of you may remember way back in February when I wrote: “We are in the first stages of creating a new initiative: a resource hub to provide information and resources for neighbors in need.” Well…due to the creativity, energy, and fierce generosity of volunteers…the Democratic Help Hub is kicking off a 6 month pilot program. Find out more here.
Finally…
In case of loss of cabin pressure, put the oxygen mask over your own mouth first. Then help others.
If you are overwhelmed, you can take a break.
The times right now are overwhelming; there is simply too much coming at us every day. I send these action emails out about twice a week. Sometimes you may appreciate reminders about daily action or validation that we are all in this together.. At other times these letters may feel like one more assault, yet another unwelcome reminder of the impossible challenge of living through the present moment.
As I’ve written elsewhere, “most of us go through our daily lives on the home front rather than the battlefield. We go to the grocery store, put children to bed, work, walk the dog. Bills get paid; the washing machine breaks or a friend needs help. There are birthdays and anniversaries and families and friends to love and care for. A whole life must occur during the ongoing threat, while our nervous systems are activated to danger by each shattering of norms or laws, by the blast forces detonating our democracy and sense of safety. The emotional whiplash and cognitive dissonance of these times is formidable….There is so much darkness now, the potential for a complete blackout of hope, of joy and spirit. The grim curtain of the news falls, dimming our vision…Self-care can look like small actions, taken individually or together. It can look like taking a break when you need one. Honor and protect the inner light of your self; tend the flame however you need to do so.”
Or, as Karen Ziegler wrote, “This time in history feels a lot to me like being with dying people. We are watching a lot of people and things die. I hope you are finding as I am that this collapse is forcing us to be in the present moment and cherish our beloveds and communities more deeply, and to learn how to perch on the razor’s edge of taking action while also practicing self-care and care for each other. We are in this for the long haul, and we can see and feel the shift to something better. Hang on.”
Our actions, however small they may feel, are making a difference. There will be many battles in this war, as there have been for generations. We didn’t want the moral arc of the universe to be quite this long, but here we are. Care for yourself; care for others. Democracy, human rights and the planet are all worth the fight.
Stay hydrated.
