Let’s be a part of and support others in our community. One of the tactics of authoritarian regimes is to make us feel alone and helpless. We are not solitary; we are all in this together. Save the date of an upcoming event to come together.
[and…this post was written and scheduled to go out before the events in LA Saturday evening, before the National Guard was activated. Adding a line here to say that we will be monitoring the situation and perhaps send out scripts and/or events next week, depending on how that unfolds]
Please continue to make phone calls to Senators, phone bank, write postcrds, canvass and protest. Options here. I’ll send out another action email soonish)
Monday: Call Governor Stein and ask him to veto SB 153.
Leave a message by calling: 919-814-2000, and then press 5. Suggested Script: “Governor Stein, I’m calling to ask you to veto SB 153, which would severely undermine public safety in all 100 counties. Stand with North Carolinians, not with Stephen Miller.”
This week, the State House passed SB 153, a bill that would require state law enforcement officers like State Troopers and the State Bureau of Investigation to gain the powers of immigration agents through ICE’s 287(g) program. This would deputize officers to have the same powers of ICE agents, meaning a traffic stop by a state trooper could lead to deportation. Let’s say NO.—from SiembraNC

Free Outdoor Movie Night. Join the Pauli Murray center for a special evening under the stars with a free outdoor screening of “My Name is Pauli Murray”
— right on the lawn of Pauli’s childhood home. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, kick back, and experience this powerful, thought-provoking film in a place rich with history. You’re welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks — and we’ll have fresh popcorn available for just $2 a bag (cash or check only)! Come early to grab a good spot!
If you are new to Durham and don’t know about Pauli Murray, this is a great opportunity to learn. If you can’t make it, pick up a copy of “Proud Shoes” and “Song In a Weary Throat.” Or read this article (even though it omits her friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt). You will be glad you did.

June 21: 2025 DURHAM JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION at NCCU
Come to the event AND…VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR needed
The 20th Annual North Carolina Juneteenth Celebration will take place on NCCU campus. This event, from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm, kicks off with the official Opening Ceremony that includes a processional with dancers, drummers, and the community, followed by a presentation by the United States Colored Troops, prayer, proclamations, pouring of the libation, and presentations on the origin and significance of Juneteenth.
Entertainment throughout the day will feature national recording artists and local performers. Vendors sell an array of African and African-American clothing, art and artifacts, specialty items, crafts, and delicious foods.
Durham Democrats would like to have an information table at this event, sharing information about us and listening to what others might need. We are looking for someone to coordinate table volunteer scheduling before we commit! If you’re interested, email Jake (3vc@durhamdemocrats.org) and Charlotte (secretary@durhamdemocrats.org).

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to train others on: how to call your reps, how to canvass, how to phone bank and how to get more involved with your Democratic party.
Laura Stamm Paye (creator of the Durham Resistance Hub) and a small team are planning a family-friendly event on June 29th at Oval Park in Old West Durham. As part of that event the team is planning to have tables dedicated to teaching attendees critical skills like how to call your reps, how to canvass, how to phone bank and how to get more involved with your Democratic party.
We need knowledgeable volunteers to staff those tables and share your skills! Get in touch with Laura at laurampaye@gmail.com if you’re interested in helping.
